→ The WWW

→ Social media*

Networks of people connected through personal or professional interests

*  People networks long predate social media.

→ academic network

A network of documents linked by cross-references and common keywords

→ The MMM A smart network of pieces of information connected through analytical links**.

**  Without the aid of technology, smart networking of pieces of information is synonymous of reasoning, a.k.a. 'connecting the dots'.

Machines, wepages, people and academic publications are all things we network using technology (whether modern or not so modern technology). They contain information, possibly a lot of it. But neither machines nor webpages etc are information themselves.
Existing technology supports the networking of things that contain information. It has yet to serve the networking of information per se.
Networking machines, people and documents has changed the world already.

Once we make it happen, networking information will certainly change the world once again.
